Welcome to Thursday!

What a rainy, gloomy day it has been...a good day to spend the afternoon watching a Christmas movie and eating popcorn...which is exactly what we did!

There is no homework over the long break. I/we even managed to get everything corrected from this week and the students came home with it all today in their folders along with an updated progress report.

Bring back tomorrow: Signed pink slip, Progress Report, filled mission envelope

Don't forget to bring your Christmas presents for our exchange!

If you have questions about what to bring for the party, please call Mrs. Amy Schneider. Thank you in advance for all of the treats!

Christmas Eve Service is on Monday beginning at 5 pm. Students should be in our classroom by 4:30 pm.  Boys-no jeans or tennis shoes; Girls-no strapless/sleeveless dresses unless there is a sweater to cover....thank you! We do not want our appearance to distract from the message of our Savior's birth.

This is my last post of 2012. May the Lord richly bless you in 2013. Enjoy the break and make use of all the worship opportunities that are given as we worship our Savior!

God's Blessings,

Miss Lau

First 10 people to email me the answer to this question get EC in a subject they choose:

Welcome to Wednesday!

Christmas Concert tonight at 6:30 pm...see you there!

Students were given shortened assignments and lots of study time today. We also studied for History in class today. SO...the students should not have a lot to do tonight. I know a test on a night of the concert is not ideal, but I tried to make sure that the students were prepared as best as possible without too much extra work tonight.

Homework:

We enjoyed our time playing class kick ball out in the snow today during our second recess...it was snow-errific! Please remember to wear boots when there is snow on the ground! Also, don't forget coats must be worn but hats and gloves are always a good idea.

We practiced our lock down drill today. The students did great, just as I had expected. My prayer is that we never have to do that again.

An extra thank you to the students for putting up with my weird cases of hiccups today...

Welcome to the last week of school for this year!

Parents,

Here is a link to some tips on talking to your students about the tragedy that struck our nation recently:

I used some of this information to start the conversation in class today. I assured the students of all the things that we do here at school to assure their safety. I did not go into the details of the events but had them ask me questions or share their thoughts/feelings. If they wanted more details than what I gave them, I said that it would be a good discussion to have with mom and dad tonight. We also prayed for the families of those who lost loved ones and how we could help them. We came up with the idea of writing letters/cards/posters and sending them.

Tomorrow, we will be practicing our emergency plan in our classroom (closing the blinds, locking the door, getting in a corner of the room away from door and window and remaining quiet). This is meant not to scare the children, but assure them their teachers know what to do when an emergency would occur. It is very much like having a tornado or fire drill...we have to be prepared.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Because most of you may not check the blog tomorrow or this weekend, my Thanksgiving note to you all:

There are many things I am thankful for: my family, my faith, food, clothing, and that I get to call Trinity "home". I am thankful to God for giving me the chance to teach your children each day. Of course I am thankful for the As that they get or the improvement in their grades, but I am most thankful for the fact that I will see each of them in heaven some day. They are truly a blessing to me as are you, parents. Thank you for being my supporters and lifting me up in prayer.

We all have things to be thankful for and this time of year, and it is such a wonderful thing to take a moment and reflect on those things.

May God richly bless your celebration of Thanksgiving.

What a beautiful fall day today!

Yes, it may be chilly, but the beautiful sunshine is a blessing! Just a reminder to make sure that your student is prepared for the colder weather.  If you send them to school with a coat in the morning, that is what I will make sure they wear at recess. Encourage them to wear hats and gloves as we get even colder weather. I know it is (hopefully) a ways off, but I do require students to wear boots when it snows; however, snow pants are optional.

Reminder - take home Social Studies Fair projects. Thank you.

We sing as a school next Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm for the Thanksgiving Eve service.

I am sending home a note today (I know...it's not a Thursday...sorry!) about an extra canvassing date for this Thursday, November 15. This is entirely OPTIONAL and it is after school. I would take students after school to some of the neighborhoods that we have not been covered yet and distribute flyers till about 4:45, when it starts to get dark. We would then come back to school for some pizza. All I would ask is for $3 donation to cover costs of the pizza and juice. Parents are welcome to join me in driving and pizza. Please fill out the form if interested or if your child would just like to go.

Tuition payments for this month also came home with some students.

Wow, turned out to be more announcements than I thought...

What a windy Tuesday (should have been a Wednesday)!

A few notes for this week:

Madison Field Trip - As of this morning, the students will get to meet with the State Representative from Racine county on Thursday morning. Originally, he was not able to make it and plans have since changed. In my 7 years of taking students to Madison, this is the first year that the students will get to meet a Representative who is working in the Capitol...very cool! See the note from yesterday's post if you have any questions about the day.

Voters' Meeting - See you there tonight at 6:30 pm! Babysitting and snacks will be available.

Book Order - These are due on or before November 16 (Christmas gifts?). Ordering online is also available at scholastic.com.

Notes coming home tonight - Graded papers, Boy Pioneer note, Pie sale reminder (orders due tomorrow!), pink slips, mission envelopes

Items to return - Pink Slip, Pie sale order forms, filled mission envelopes

TST - This was emailed to you today and included some good tips on family time. Please check it out! My favorite tip is playing games with your family. I have some great ideas for board games that are different than your typical Monopoly  Let me know if you'd like to borrow mine...they are fantastic and my family enjoys them whenever we get together.

Christ Light - Ws. 11a from Monday
Catechism - Ws. 18 on the cost of our redemption

Thank goodness it is Thursday!

We had an AWESOME time canvassing today. 6 drivers and 23 students delivered 789 flyers to 789 houses. WOW! Please join me in prayer that those flyers might lead some to our church which will lead them to their Savior. Depending on how many maps are finished after this weekend, we may do another round of deliveries in two weeks. I will keep you updated. Thank you to all of our drivers for braving the the windy and slightly rainy weather.

The final Progress Report for this quarter has come home this today. The next time that you see grades will be on the report card in about two weeks. Hard to believe the first quarter has come to an end.

A note regarding the Madison field trip has come home. Please look it over and let me know of any issues.

A plethora of other notes also came home today with your student. Please take some time to look those over and bring back to school those that need to be returned. Thank you!

Most of you got my e-mail about conferences, but just in case you didn't: If any of you would like to sign up to meet with me October 29-31, please let me know. I have some time slots still available. If you'd rather sign up on Thursday and Friday, send the note back that you received today.

Welcome to a new week!

We had a great discussion this morning during Christ Light class about being, "fishers of men." We studied Luke 5:1-11 where Jesus called his disciples to no longer catch fish, but "catch" people for him. In a sense, we are called to be fishers of men, as well. One of those opportunities presents itself as we assemble to canvass the neighborhoods on Thursday afternoon as a class. The students seem very excited to help their church in this small way. If you are unable to help us on Thursday but would still like to help in the flyer delivery effort, there is a canvassing day set for this Saturday starting at 10 am and running until 3 pm with a potluck at noon. All are welcome!

Science - We began reading about cell division today and it correlated with what Mrs. Erbe talked about to us this morning during her presentation...tomorrow we look forward to Mr. Erbe coming in and showing us all the cool bacteria that we grew today!
History - We started a politics unit today. The students are living through history this year and I want to take advantage of that. The 8th graders in my American History class are running a mock election in which they have taken on the roles of made-up candidates, campaign managers, reports, etc. We look forward to learning from them, as well as taking a day or two off of "normal" history class to learn about the election process ourselves.  This week, students are to take a look at one or two political ads and fill out the sheet given to them today. This is due on Friday.

PE - We started our football game today. We will play this week and next and then finish up our unit with assessments during the first few weeks of November.

WoD: Canvassing

Welcome back!

I hope that everyone had a nice, relaxing weekend. I enjoyed time spent with family, even though it was a very cold Saturday of sitting and watching softball and football!

On Monday, our faculty spent the day at Shoreland Lutheran High School with other teachers from the area learning about forms of assessments.  There are many ways that teachers can assess students and it is not just through a test or a written assignment. I will be working on implementing a few of the ideas that I learned yesterday including one that I already used with the students today. They are called "exit cards" and I will mainly use them for Math. They are mini-assignments that the students do before we are done with math class. They tell me if the concept taught was grasped. I correct them and then talk over the ones marked wrong with the individual student. Today went very well! I did promise to make the writing space easier to write on...I'm still learning :-)

Homework:

Christ Light - Ws. 7b from last Wednesday

Welcome back!

Another quick reminder to the 6th graders that Terra Nova testing begins tomorrow. Students should have at least two #2 pencils and a good book to read. Remember: lots of sleep (no staying up TOO late to watch the Packers WIN), eat a good breakfast, and relax!

Google Docs reminder: Parents...this one is for you: As painful as it may be to see your student typing very slowly at the computer, please let them do the work. They will only get better if they practice. They complete two typing lessons each day and should be encouraged to work on it at home in their free time as well. Encourage proper hand placement as I will be testing them in this in the 2nd quarter. I know it is hard but in the end...you are helping them!

Thank you to all those who came to sing this morning. I got lots of compliments not only on the students' singing, but also from a few members who were in the balcony on how well behaved the class was. Thank you - to GOD alone be the GLORY!

ATTENTION 6th GRADERS: Terra Nova testing will begin on Tuesday this week and run through Friday. We will be skipping a few classes each day in order to complete these achievement tests. I will also avoid any other major tests this week except for a Math test on Wednesday.

We thank Mrs. Burnett for agreeing to proctor the tests.

Tips during test week:

Get 8+ hours of sleep each night
Eat a good breakfast each morning with lots of OJ (to stay healthy!)
Come to school each day...making up tests can be stressful on teacher AND student
Finally...RELAX - these tests are not graded but instead they give me an idea on where the student is academically

Extra Credit: First 10 students to email me (mlau@trinitycaledonia.org) the answer to this question get some EC in a class that they choose: What was the theme of today's worship services?

We did it! We made it to another weekend!

Mission Update: As a class, we have collected $80.29 over the last three weeks. That is just under our $30 a week goal...THANK YOU! Continue to pray for the Mission to the Children.

Progress Reports came home today. Please sign and return the bottom portion on Monday. Do not be too alarmed by the grades. In some classes, like Literature and History, we only have a few grades in the grade book. One really bad grade could really bring the overall grade down. Encourage your student to work really hard in that class over the next week or two and I'm sure you will see immediate improvement.

Homework:

Catechism - Ws. 6
Math - Lesson 14 Odds
Literature - Read "Autumn" and be prepared for a quiz on Monday

WoD: clean (we did a number on our classroom today...come by and check it out...we have more room!)

Friday Greetings!

A few things to take note of as we wrap up this week:

Class Singing - We will be singing in church on September 23rd at the early (8 am) service.  Children should bring a note to school if, because of a scheduling conflict, they are unable to attend. We will be singing Hymn 771 - I want to Walk as a Child of the Light.

Typing Program - The students received their username and passwords this week. The link to the program is on the right hand side of this blog post. Students are allowed to work on it from home but are doing at least two lessons each day. I am also working on developing a simple computer curriculum to help the children learn more about computers and using them in a POSITIVE way.

Book Order - Thank you for placing an order this month! I was able to get lots of free books with bonus points that will be enjoyed by all. Orders are expected to arrive next week. We will skip October because of the Book Fair. Look for the next order in November.

Room Parent - Volunteer sheets went home yesterday, please return!

Progress Reports - You will find the first progress report NEXT WEEK. They will then come home daily until the week before the quarter ends. These will need to be signed and returned the next day.

Social Studies Fair - This is in NOVEMBER this year. More information to come home next week!

Mission Offering Update - We collected $27.23 this week for a classroom total of $49.97. Wow...thank you! Continue to pray for the Mission to the Children in Mexico.

Good evening!

It is 8:20 pm and I'm still at school...something is wrong with this picture!

I am sorry for the late post. I am sure most of you kiddos are checking this on Friday morning anyway so I won't post assignments, just a few reminders and, of course, the WoD.

Book Orders due this Friday!

Late slips are to be returned the next day. I will try to email you if you child receives one. Sometimes they get "lost" on the way home. Keep on encouraging your child to write down their assignments and make sure the work is in their folder/binder before heading back to school. Thank you!

I know there was probably more I wanted to write, but have now forgotten.  I bid you...farewell.

Totally tubular terrific Tuesday! (students...what is that called? Hint: Lit class today!)

We had a few students who had unfinished assignments today. For the first one at the beginning of the year, I do give them a "gimmee" but the next one will be a late slip.

The students are given ample time during the day to get their work done and at the end of the day to check their work. They are to keep their finished assignments in their binders and unfinished work in their "Homework Folders" which goes home EACH night. Please look for this folder and check over any work before signing their assignment notebook.  I have been drilling this process each day and am confident that we will see results in fewer late slips...but I need your help - thank you!

Homework:

Christ Light (from Monday) - Ws. 2a on Jesus' Birth
Catechism - Ws. 1 on the Bible and Teachings (ask your student about the "With Your Family" section!)
