Welcome to the last week of school for this year!

Parents,

Here is a link to some tips on talking to your students about the tragedy that struck our nation recently:

I used some of this information to start the conversation in class today. I assured the students of all the things that we do here at school to assure their safety. I did not go into the details of the events but had them ask me questions or share their thoughts/feelings. If they wanted more details than what I gave them, I said that it would be a good discussion to have with mom and dad tonight. We also prayed for the families of those who lost loved ones and how we could help them. We came up with the idea of writing letters/cards/posters and sending them.

Tomorrow, we will be practicing our emergency plan in our classroom (closing the blinds, locking the door, getting in a corner of the room away from door and window and remaining quiet). This is meant not to scare the children, but assure them their teachers know what to do when an emergency would occur. It is very much like having a tornado or fire drill...we have to be prepared.

If you have any questions, let me know.
