What a windy Tuesday (should have been a Wednesday)!

A few notes for this week:

Madison Field Trip - As of this morning, the students will get to meet with the State Representative from Racine county on Thursday morning. Originally, he was not able to make it and plans have since changed. In my 7 years of taking students to Madison, this is the first year that the students will get to meet a Representative who is working in the Capitol...very cool! See the note from yesterday's post if you have any questions about the day.

Voters' Meeting - See you there tonight at 6:30 pm! Babysitting and snacks will be available.

Book Order - These are due on or before November 16 (Christmas gifts?). Ordering online is also available at scholastic.com.

Notes coming home tonight - Graded papers, Boy Pioneer note, Pie sale reminder (orders due tomorrow!), pink slips, mission envelopes

Items to return - Pink Slip, Pie sale order forms, filled mission envelopes

TST - This was emailed to you today and included some good tips on family time. Please check it out! My favorite tip is playing games with your family. I have some great ideas for board games that are different than your typical Monopoly  Let me know if you'd like to borrow mine...they are fantastic and my family enjoys them whenever we get together.

Thank goodness it is Thursday!

We had an AWESOME time canvassing today. 6 drivers and 23 students delivered 789 flyers to 789 houses. WOW! Please join me in prayer that those flyers might lead some to our church which will lead them to their Savior. Depending on how many maps are finished after this weekend, we may do another round of deliveries in two weeks. I will keep you updated. Thank you to all of our drivers for braving the the windy and slightly rainy weather.

The final Progress Report for this quarter has come home this today. The next time that you see grades will be on the report card in about two weeks. Hard to believe the first quarter has come to an end.

A note regarding the Madison field trip has come home. Please look it over and let me know of any issues.

A plethora of other notes also came home today with your student. Please take some time to look those over and bring back to school those that need to be returned. Thank you!

Most of you got my e-mail about conferences, but just in case you didn't: If any of you would like to sign up to meet with me October 29-31, please let me know. I have some time slots still available. If you'd rather sign up on Thursday and Friday, send the note back that you received today.

Welcome to a new week!

We had a great discussion this morning during Christ Light class about being, "fishers of men." We studied Luke 5:1-11 where Jesus called his disciples to no longer catch fish, but "catch" people for him. In a sense, we are called to be fishers of men, as well. One of those opportunities presents itself as we assemble to canvass the neighborhoods on Thursday afternoon as a class. The students seem very excited to help their church in this small way. If you are unable to help us on Thursday but would still like to help in the flyer delivery effort, there is a canvassing day set for this Saturday starting at 10 am and running until 3 pm with a potluck at noon. All are welcome!

Science - We began reading about cell division today and it correlated with what Mrs. Erbe talked about to us this morning during her presentation...tomorrow we look forward to Mr. Erbe coming in and showing us all the cool bacteria that we grew today!
History - We started a politics unit today. The students are living through history this year and I want to take advantage of that. The 8th graders in my American History class are running a mock election in which they have taken on the roles of made-up candidates, campaign managers, reports, etc. We look forward to learning from them, as well as taking a day or two off of "normal" history class to learn about the election process ourselves.  This week, students are to take a look at one or two political ads and fill out the sheet given to them today. This is due on Friday.

PE - We started our football game today. We will play this week and next and then finish up our unit with assessments during the first few weeks of November.

The weather outside is quickly changing which means our choice of clothing should, too! I will not keep a child in for recess because of some article of clothing (coat, hat, mittens, etc.) are not on. The students are old enough to remember these things for themselves. Welcome back!

I hope that everyone had a nice, relaxing weekend. I enjoyed time spent with family, even though it was a very cold Saturday of sitting and watching softball and football!

On Monday, our faculty spent the day at Shoreland Lutheran High School with other teachers from the area learning about forms of assessments.  There are many ways that teachers can assess students and it is not just through a test or a written assignment. I will be working on implementing a few of the ideas that I learned yesterday including one that I already used with the students today. They are called "exit cards" and I will mainly use them for Math. They are mini-assignments that the students do before we are done with math class. They tell me if the concept taught was grasped. I correct them and then talk over the ones marked wrong with the individual student. Today went very well! I did promise to make the writing space easier to write on...I'm still learning :-)

Homework:

Christ Light - Ws. 7b from last Wednesday
Catechism - Ws. 13
Memory Work - #792, 793 in blue Catechism book
Math - Lesson 26, all
